Kashedance!

Kashedance is the brainchild of dancer, teacher and choreographer, Kevin A. Ormsby and aspires to present works based on revealing humanity through kinetic movement, spirituality and rhythmic vitality. With the use of an emerging dance technique called “kashedantek”, technically versatile in its execution and delivery, movements of traditional and modern dance is fused with ballet to reflect a contemporary synthesis. The Company’s style is explosive, subtle, confronting, virtuosic yet passionate and combines the historic traditions of Africa and the Caribbean in its representation of Diasporic Canadian society. “Indeed we all breathe, feel and dance” this philosophic approach is present in the works of the Company and is coupled with endless possibilities of the dancer’s body in motion.

Kashedance will be performing this Saturday Feb 27th at Series 8:08 at the Pia Bowman Scotiabank Studio Theatre at 8:08 pm. See you there!

We Are The World 25

25 years is a long time... The song is as relevant today as it was then. It was really great that they found a way to include Michael into this new version. I was equally impressed with the revised hip-hop
section... though the T-Pain autotune stuff just has to come to an end;-) Again there are lots of links for you to donate and help the people of Haiti including now the We Are The World Foundation. Please give!

Nollywood

Pieter Hugo has created a series of images documenting the Nigerian film industry sometimes refered to as Nollywood. The third largest film industry in the world. The series of images confront with a very similar world: the situations are clearly surreal, although they could be real on a set; furthermore, they are rooted in the local symbolic imaginary. The boundaries between documentary and fiction become very fluid, and we are left wondering whether our perceptions of the real world are indeed real. In 2008 Hugo was the winner of the KLM Paul Huf Award and the Arles Discovery Award at the Rencontres d'Arles Photography Festival in France. He had solo exhibitions at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool and Ffotogallery in Penarth, Wales. Group shows in 2008 included Street & Studio: An urban history of photography at Tate Modern, London, and Make Art/Stop AIDS at the Fowler Museum, UCLA. Hugo was the Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art in 2007.

TITF!

There are a couple photographers who's work I really enjoy, one being David LaChapelle and the other being Annie Leibovitz. Both are accomplished portrait photographers to be sure but one of their unique talents has been to take the model who is usually a celebrity and construct images around them that hyper accentuates their personality. In many cases these images inform while bending reality. As I have always wanted to explore the editorial aspects of this kind of photography It was awesome to connect with an up and coming Toronto personality Travoy who is in the process of creating an online presence with his website Travoy in the Flesh which will be an entertainment portal. Taking the obvious metaphor we have begun a series of images which employ several entertainment motifs around the theme of the star. Here are but three of our initial images. As you can see the final images are created with several photo-shopped elements. His website will be out soon but until then look him up on facebook Travoy in the Flesh
